Liverpool Agree Fee with Preston North End for Ben Davies

What a night. Since we recorded episode #32 of the podcast this morning, a lot has happened. We made a jokey reference about Ben Davies going to Liverpool but little did we know, it would actually become reality.

Tonight, it’s been widely reported that Liverpool and North End have agreed a fee in the region of £2m for Ben Davies. He’s no stranger to Premier League interest having been linked with both Brighton and Newcastle in recent times but I don’t think anyone saw a move to Liverpool coming but, if there’s one player who deserves the opportunity at North End, it’s Ben.

He’s been a stalwart for us since Alex Neil came in and is going to prove difficult to replace but that’s a discussion for another time. Now, I’d just like to wish Ben all the best with his move, I have absolutely no doubt in his ability to step up to the Premier League, it’ll be strange, interesting and many other things to watch him playing in the same side as Jordan Henderson, Mo Salah and Sadio Mané but as I mentioned earlier, he doesn’t half deserve the chance.

Ben is a lad who has been at North End since he was a boy and joined the club at 11-years-old, made his first-team debut in 2013 and has had loan spells at York City, Tranmere Rovers, Southport, Newport County and Fleetwood Town and it was with the Cod Army that he made the move from a somewhat iffy left back to a centre back and it’s safe to say, he hasn’t looked back.

He’s a big lad standing at just over 6ft but as Oli said during our recording this morning, he’s not very physically imposing but, has plenty of scope to improve on that. What he is though is a diamond of a footballer, he’s superb with the ball at his feet, can comfortably bring the out from the back, loves a diag and reads the ball excellently.

In his time in the first XI under Alex Neil, Ben has become probably one of the most important members of our side and an indispensable member of the defence, if he’s fit, he plays, it’s as simple as that. Hell, he’s even played through injury a number of times, that’s how much the manager rates him and how important he is to our back four.

He’ll absolutely be missed and will no doubt go with every single North End fan’s best wishes, seeing one of our own join the Champions of England doesn’t happen very often. All the best, Ben and thanks for the memories.
